Whether it is for a vacation home or to live in a quiet town, Lake Waccamaw has a lot to offer.  Actually the lake was recently named to the “Top 25 Small Lake Towns We’re Seriously Obsessed With“.   Additionally the Country Living article ranked the quaint little lake town as #6 in the country!  It is such a small town, I would venture that most people living an hour or more away, have not visited to take in the experience.  This jewel has been a secret hiding spot for a long time.  A traveler in 1733, upon seeing the lake stated, “This is the pleasantest place that I ever saw in my life”.  So why is this small Columbus County town so highly ranked and liked?

Over Labor Day weekend, the lake is host to hundreds of participants that try to “Take the Lake”.  This is a unique fitness oriented, free event for anyone from young children to senior citizens.  The good thing is it is not a race!  From Saturday – Monday, events include a 16 mile walk/run, 14 mile paddle, 16 mile bike & hike, and finally 4 mile swim.  If you really want a challenge, try the “Take the Lake Extreme”.  This event is for those that attempt to complete all 4 events in one day.  It is purely to promote health and to enjoy the beauty of the large natural freshwater lake.

So what do you do the other days of the year?  First of all, Lake Waccamaw is not a highly commercialized area.  But there are lots of things to do and most are outside.  The state park which is located on the backside of the lake has something for everyone.  There is a museum to learn the lake’s history.  Additionally, there are hiking trails, picnic and camping areas, and a pier to access the lake.  On the 4th of July, many will hop on a boat, sit on a pier, or park by the road to see the fireworks shot all around the lake.  Because the lake is such a large freshwater lake, there is plenty of room for you to enjoy the water.

There are a few local employers such as Top Tobacco, government jobs, Boys & Girls Home, & local schools.  Although, residents of the lake typically travel for employment.  But employment commutes are not far to areas such as Wilmington, Whiteville, and Brunswick County.
