Many families prefer to live in a suburban or rural areas.\u00a0 Buying a home outside the city often means the water source comes from a private or community well.\u00a0 Veterans, active military, or surviving spouses\u00a0need to understand\u00a0how VA looks at a well.\u00a0\u00a0The Veteran’s Administration <\/a>requires that\u00a0a\u00a0property meets minimum property standards.\u00a0\u00a0These standards require that the property is connected to an adequate water supply.\u00a0 Additionally, the water should be safe and drinkable.\u00a0 So if the property\u00a0has a well, then a VA well<\/a> water test is required.<\/p>\n

In order to determine the water is safe, VA uses the guidelines\u00a0of the local health authority governing the area of the property.\u00a0 In the absence of a local governing health authority, the guidelines of the EPA determine if the water is potable.\u00a0 Potable basically means drinkable.\u00a0 If a property’s water source comes from a community well, it must be tested as well.\u00a0 Finally, properties with public water, such as county or city,\u00a0are assumed safe.<\/p>\n

How the VA Well Water Test Works<\/h2>\n

When it comes to a VA well water test, there are options.\u00a0 Some labs or testing companies require they collect the water samples.\u00a0 Conversely, other labs allow someone else to collect and supply the water sample.\u00a0 Costs for these tests vary depending on the individual company, distance of travel (if applicable), and if it is a rush.<\/p>\n

If using a VA loan and there is a private well mentioned on the VA appraisal, then a well test is required.\u00a0 The VA well water test looks for coliform and e-coli presence.\u00a0 If other tests are provided and any fail, it would need to be corrected.\u00a0 Then a new test with clean results must be provided.\u00a0 For community wells, VA requires documentation from the county or company servicing the well.\u00a0 The documentation must state they maintain the well, how often it is tested, and the last test results.<\/p>\n
